Signs of the Times:
Each day we are confronted by hundreds of signs and statements that provide information; advertise products or services; express anger, frustration or delight; or indicate the passage of time.   From graffiti, corny clichés and illegible scrawl to social comment and sophisticated art forms, these signs all evoke a variety of responses.  With a little diligence, it’s fairly easy to build up a photographic collection of signs that have a common theme, whether it’s inn signs, billboards, stained glass or neon signs, or signs that are simply funny or incongruous.

Besides affording many photographic opportunities, they give you the chance to make a comment on, or document, modern life.  Look around you, you’ll be amazed what ‘statements’ are out there!

Most signs are located above eye level, so it may be useful to have a medium to long telephoto lens that lets you stand back and shoot from an angle that doesn’t distort your subject.  A macro lens can also be handy for taking close-ups of details.
