Division: Photojournalism

Definition

Photojournalism entries shall consist of images or sequences of images with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth and model or staged set-ups are not permitted.

Human Interest images depict a person or persons in an interactive, emotional, or unusual situation, excluding recreational or organized sports action. Click here for PSA guidelines for Human Interest Images.

Note: Entrants are cautioned that the last sentence of the first paragraphincludes any images that appear to be posed, even though they may not have been posed. Entrants are therefore advised that such images are likely to be disqualified (DQed).

Borders must not exceed 3 pixels in width.

Every other competition, entries will be restricted to Human Interest subjects.

Notes: Although the storytelling value of a PJ image must predominate and be present for the image to receive a high score, a PJ image must still be technically correct and well-composed. Note that posed images will be DQ'ed or receive a low score - to ensure a judge does not erroneously assume an image is posed, it is good practice not to have subjects looking straight into the camera. Although sports action images are not permitted into PJ Human Interest, not all images of sports participants are considered sports action - thus, for example, a photo of a boy in baseball uniform crying off the field woudl not be considered sports action..
